The IP based mobile network, and how it'll change everything.

As mobile networks slowly move away from the older technologies and towards IP based ones, I'm beginning to realize just how much this will change things. IP based technologies like VoLTE will allow crystal clear audio, or HD audio, whichever the marketing gurus will choose to call it. This will make our current, mediocre call quality sound like walkie talkies in comparison.

Another aspect of mobile communication that I think has huge potential for an overhaul due to this, is text messaging. In order to send a text message to someone right now, your options are the universally supported but feature scarce SMS, or any number of the more advanced options (WhatsApp, Google Hangouts, iMessage, etc.) that aren't so universal. If you want to use any of these apps, you have to convince your friends to use it as well, a hallmark of the network effect. A next generation SMS could take full advantage of IP, allowing for a truly universal messaging system that also includes all the advantages of said apps, such as instantaneous sending/receiving, ability to see if someone has read your message, no limitations on filesize, video chatting, more advanced group messaging, the list goes on.

Although I'm one of the last people that would prefer carriers control something over technology companies, this is one space where I think that such a scenario is beneficial to all. All you carriers out there, if you're listening, get together and get it done!
